Nature Connectedness
Reflecting the the emotional, cognitive, and experiential bond between people and nature, recognising humans as an integral part of the environment rather than separate from it, Nature connectedness is the extent to which an individual experiences a sense of belonging and relationship with the natural world. It
A strong sense of nature connectedness can be developed through meaningful interactions with natural environments and is associated with greater appreciation of biodiversity, environmental stewardship, and personal wellbeing. It influences how individuals perceive, value, and care for the natural world, often inspiring behaviours that support conservation and sustainability.
Within the context of artistic practice, nature connectedness provides a foundation for observation, creativity, and reflection. It encourages deeper engagement with natural landscapes, forms, and processes, enabling artists to communicate the beauty, complexity, and significance of the environment through their work.
Nature connectedness creates perspective as we can situate ourselves as part of something larger, with seasonal seasons, growth, renewal and change. The concept and its evidence-base is an integral part of my artistic practice and links to my psychology career and values, and I want to bring this into my relationship with my viewers. Time in natural settings can help us feel calmer, lower mental fatigue, and provide a break from constant stimulation and natural environments offer new sights, sounds, and patterns that can inspire ideas and problem-solving. Feeling connected to the natural world can strengthen our sense of place, purpose, and responsibility toward the environment and watching birds, listening to rain, or noticing trees and flowers naturally draws our attention to the present moment.
